During this course we will look at the nature and impact of moisture on solid stone and/or brick construction, how to manage and maintain maximum vapour permeability (i.e. the allowance of liquids & gases to pass through) and the use of lime mortars and natural breathable insulation to enhance and ensure the longevity and safety of the historic fabric of the building.

Course Agenda

-       Moisture in construction- the four key areas

-       Traditional masonry and the construction of the solid wall

-       Traditional mortar – types used in original construction

-       Building physics and breathability- 3 elements of moisture movement

-       External and internal conditions- the cause and effects of moisture buildup

-       Lime types and the lime cycle

-       Breathability- how materials permit air to pass through

-       Why mortars fail.......characteristics, vapour permeability and strength

-       Moisture damage

-      The difference between various mortars- insulating lime mortars, natural hydraulic and         non- hydraulic lime mortars.

-       The insulation layer- potential issues external and internal

-       Building health and internal temperature, ventilation and moisture buffering

-       Wall insulation- breathable insulation boards. Pros and cons of internal v external insulations

-       Breathable flooring options

-       Case studies

-       Q&A session open to all attendees
