What is Cork:

Cork is the bark of the cork oak (Quercus Suber L.), which means it is a plant tissue 100% natural. It is formed by a honeycomb of microscopic cells filled with a gas similar to the air and lined mainly of suberin and lignin. A single cubic centimeter of cork includes almost 40 million cells.

Removed every nine years without any trees being cut in the process, the cork gives origin to a myriad of products, from traditional to the most innovative and unexpected. Each cork oak tree takes 25 years to be harvested the first time and the cork removed in the first two harvests, as well as the cork removed by pruning the tree, results in a raw material for insulation, flooring and products to such diverse fields as construction, fashion or design.

The harvest is done by highly skilled professionals, always between May and August, when the tree is in a more active growth phase and becomes easier Cork extraction it without hurting the trunk. For being a renewable and recyclable product, it is regarded as a raw material of excellence with favorable consequences for natural resources and for Planet Earth.

The cork trees, from which cork is harvested, are evergreen trees of the family of oaks and chestnut trees. Only exist in some Mediterranean countries - Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The cork oak is the only tree whose bark regenerates itself, acquiring a smoother texture after each extraction. It may be harvested about 17 times over a longevity that is on average 200 years.
