Lightweight Hemp-Clay Building Board is a breathable internal hemp-clay board for walls, ceilings and sloped roofs, combining the natural moisture-regulating benefits of clay with a lighter, easier-to-handle format for dry construction. Manufactured by Conluto to DIN 18948, it is made from clay, hemp shives and fibres, sand, and jute mesh reinforcement on both sides, making it a strong natural choice for healthy, vapour-open interiors. It is suitable for paneling, wall linings, ceiling linings and dry construction systems in both renovation and new-build projects.
Designed as a more manageable alternative to heavier clay boards, this lightweight clay building board is especially well suited to homeowners, self-builders and installers who want the performance of clay in a board that is easier to handle on site. We offer it in both 14mm and 22mm thicknesses. The 14mm board weighs approximately 12kg per board / 10kg per m², while the 22mm board weighs approximately 19kg per board / 15kg per m², helping make lifting, positioning and fixing more practical than denser heavyweight options.
This hemp-clay board can be used on timber or metal substructures, and also on suitable full-surface backgrounds such as existing plaster, concrete, brick and sand-lime brick when fixed correctly. It can be installed using screws, staples or full-surface adhesive, depending on the background and build-up. For straightforward specification on standard stud layouts, the 14mm board is intended for 400mm-centred studwork, while the 22mm board is suitable for 400mm or 600mm-centred studwork. Conluto’s technical sheet also includes detailed maximum substructure spacings for different wall, ceiling and sloped-roof applications, so final installation should always follow the project-specific technical guidance.
Once installed, the board forms part of a full breathable clay system. Joints and fixings are typically finished with clay adhesive and reinforcement mortar, followed by a reinforcing mesh layer, and then a final clay finish such as fine clay plaster, decorative clay plaster or clay paint. This makes Lightweight Hemp-Clay Building Board an excellent base for natural interior finishes where breathability, appearance and indoor comfort matter.
