Clay Plaster is a natural breathable clay plaster for internal walls and ceilings, ideal for renovation, natural building and heritage projects in Ireland. Made from construction clay and blended sands, this coarse clay plaster is supplied as a ready-to-use dry mix and can be applied by hand or machine, making it a practical choice for both small and larger internal plastering jobs.

Designed for single or multi-layer internal application, Clay Plaster is suitable for a wide range of backgrounds including wood fibre boards, reed mats, lightweight clay substrates and masonry. Its coarse grain structure gives it good body for levelling and backing coats, while still allowing a natural, breathable wall build-up that suits traditional and vapour-open construction.

This internal clay plaster can be applied in layers from 5mm to 15mm, giving flexibility depending on the substrate and the build-up required. It can be trowelled, thrown on by hand, or sprayed using a plastering machine. Multiple layers are possible, and reinforcing mesh can also be embedded where needed. Depending on the timing and finishing method, a range of surface textures can be achieved.

For coverage, 25kg of Clay Plaster yields approximately 17 litres of mortar, covering around 1.7m² at 10mm thickness. Water addition is approximately 4.25 litres per 25kg bag, although this can be adjusted depending on the substrate, application method and coat thickness. The mixed material remains workable for several days if covered, which can be a real advantage on site.

The substrate should be solid, clean, dry, sufficiently rough and free from film-forming residues, as clay plaster relies on mechanical grip for adhesion. Old paints and similar coatings must be completely removed. Porous surfaces should be well moistened before application, while sand-lime brick should not be pre-wetted. For finishing, breathable and absorbent coatings should be used.
