Damp Properties (In-Person / Online CPD)

Damp Properties (In-Person / Online CPD)

Ideal For:

  • Historic/Listed Building Consultants

  • Architects

  • Damp Specialists

  • Building Surveyors

  • Students of Architecture & Construction

  • Anyone with an interest in sustainable or traditional building methods

Course Overview

This course explores the causes and behaviour of damp in buildings, with a particular focus on traditional solid-wall construction and moisture management strategies.

Participants will gain an understanding of building physics principles including vapour diffusion, capillary action, condensation risk and the relationship between thermal performance and moisture movement. The session highlights the importance of selecting vapour-permeable materials such as lime mortars, insulating plasters and breathable insulation systems to ensure long-term durability and healthy internal environments.

Through technical analysis, real project case studies and practical guidance, the seminar demonstrates how effective ventilation, moisture buffering and balanced retrofit design can significantly improve building performance, comfort and resilience.

Course Agenda

  • What is damp? Definitions and impacts on building performance

  • Moisture in construction – external and internal sources

  • Traditional masonry and solid-wall behaviour

  • Moisture movement mechanisms – capillarity, vapour diffusion and convection

  • Penetrating moisture, interstitial condensation and rising damp

  • Heat loss, relative humidity and condensation risk

  • Salt crystallisation and moisture-related material decay

  • Breathability and the role of vapour-permeable construction materials

  • Lime mortars compared with cement mortars – permeability and compatibility

  • Insulation strategies and potential risks associated with impermeable systems

  • Breathable insulation options including wood fibre, calcium silicate and insulating plasters

  • Limecrete flooring and hydrostatic moisture considerations

  • Moisture buffering performance of breathable internal finishes

  • Ventilation strategies and the importance of air changes per hour

  • Case studies demonstrating improved comfort, durability and U-value performance

  • Open Q&A session
