This course introduces the main types of lime used in construction, conservation and retrofit, with a focus on understanding the differences between the various lime binders and their appropriate applications.
Participants will explore how quicklime, hydrated lime, lime putty, natural hydraulic limes, formulated limes and blended products are produced and how they set. The course examines how these materials differ in strength, breathability and moisture management, and why different lime products are not interchangeable.
Through technical information, practical guidance and examples, the session demonstrates how to select appropriate lime binders for mortars, renders, plasters and finishes, with particular emphasis on compatibility with traditional building fabric.
