Steico Wood Fibre Insulation - It's Advantages

Wood processed into STEICO wood fibre insulating materials delivers truly outstanding performance. The wood fibres create tiny air pockets within the insulation boards providing proven excellent insulation performance wood fibre insulation is ideal for the construction of state-of-the-art energy-saving buildings or for energy saving renovations.

At Roundtower we are proud to stock an incredible range of STEICO Wood Fibre Insulation for their quality, sustainability, effectiveness and value for money. They are also highly respected products that come with a number of certifications.

STEICO offers its customers ecological construction products from renewable raw materials and has been able to position itself in its thirty-five-year history as a system provider for ecological house building and innovation drivers. STEICO is engaged in a “supporting healthy buildings” campaign to promote the health and wellbeing benefits of using its ecological wood fibre insulations and is collaborating with many organisations to endorse the credentials of natural materials in the built environment. STEICO is actively driving the trend amongst architects and specifiers to select natural, breathable wood fibre solutions that meet the government’s ambition for healthy homes and buildings.

WOOD BASED INSULATION – INHIBITS MOISTURE AND STORES ENERGY

Among its many great characteristics, wood:

  • has a long life
  • is highly durable
  • is easy to work with

It is also hygroscopic, which means that it has the capacity to absorb and release a moderate amount of moisture without being damaged. It is this property that also makes wood an excellent insulation material.

Inhibiting and storing is how one might sum up the function of insulation made from wood fibre. A life cycle analysis (LCA) of wood products makes the advantages of the material even clearer. Wood is an important raw material, a socioeconomic treasure.

It is a renewable resource, as long as the raw material is managed according to a consciously sustainable harvesting plan with responsibility for future growth, as is the case in European forestry. This is usually evidenced through certification either FSC the Forest Stewardship Council or PEFC the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, or both.

Benefits of Steico Wood Fibre

Wood is, by its very nature, a particularly energy-efficient building material. Even as a solid beam it insulates around 10 times better than concrete and 350 times better than steel.

REDUCTION IN CO2

Using wood fibre insulation means you are making a significant contribution to reducing CO2. 1 m3 of wood binds up to 1 t CO2 this CO2, which has been removed from the atmosphere, remains ‘locked up’ within the material (and the building fabric) over the entire lifetime of the building. Using wood fibre as the insulation material on an average size single-family home, for example, binds as much CO2 as a small car releases over 50,000 km.

NO HARMFUL ADDITIVES

All of STEICO’s insulating materials are manufactured without any harmful additives. Wood fibre insulating materials thus provide the best conditions for a living climate that is perfectly compatible with building biology. The excellent quality of STEICO’s products is also regularly confirmed by independent experts such as the Öko-Test-Verlag. This allows you to be sure that STEICO products will serve you and the environment well not only today, but also for many years to come.

In order to make planning of buildings and passive houses with natural materials easier, detailed planning documents are available, e.g. the Passive House Certification Report with all construction details.

SUMMER HEAT PROTECTION

Thanks to its high heat storage capacity, the wood fibre insulation can buffer summer heat over a period of several hours. Most heat does not even get into the living space, overheating is delayed and reduced in equal measure. In the cooler evening and night hours, the stored heat can then radiate outwards again and escape.

Compared to many synthetic insulation materials, wood fibre insulation materials are much less likely to reach temperature levels that cause discomfort. With STEICO wood fibre insulation materials, heat peaks are reduced by 25 to 33 per cent (expert analysis by Prof. Hauser). The result: with wood fibre insulation materials, we feel less discomfort on hot summer days. They regulate temperature in a natural way, increase well-being and are also good for the environment.

SOUND INSULATION

Owing to the fibrous structure and the higher gross density of STEICO insulating materials, they are able to make an important contribution to the acoustic performance of the structure. Not only reducing external airborne sound (for example road noise) but also that within the building. With STEICO systems it is possible to reduce the effects of impact sound transferred through the structure

WATER VAPOUR OPEN

STEICO insulating materials function as the clothing for the house. Excessive water vapour (e.g. from cooking or showering) can permeate through the structure. This vapour permeability prevents mould and construction damage.

At the same time, wax additives create a water resisting (hydrophobic) nature to STEICO products providing effective protection from the elements. STEICO sarking and sheathing may be exposed for up to 8 weeks as a temporary building covering.

ENERGY SAVING AND PROPERTY VALUE INCREASES

With STEICO you will find a comprehensive assortment of insulating materials for roofs, floors, walls and facades in a new building or redevelopment projects. With STEICO products, you can dramatically reduce energy consumption while at the same time, increase the value of your property. Example calculations show that during a redevelopment with STEICO products, savings of up to 80% are possible.

SUSTAINABLE AND CERTIFIED PRODUCTS

STEICO Wood fibre insulating materials are manufactured entirely from timber or hemp. The timber is sourced from forest thinnings or as a sawmill by-product. The independent FSC® certification (Forest Stewardship Council®) guarantees that the timber used for STEICO products originates from managed forestry.

During production, no harmful additives are used. Any additives used are naturally sourced and their use minimised. All our insulation materials rely on the 'Lignin' inherent in the timber as a bonding agent, rather than artificially introduced resins.

With the use of STEICO products you not only reduce the impact on the environment but also improve the environment in your property.
